Oblong Nantucket Basket

Weaver Anne Lima will return to teach an oblong Nantucket basket with a pattern design on the long sides. Students can copy sample design or use their own. Students will learn how to correctly shape the corners on the oblong mold. Basket has a cherry base and rim with cane staves and weavers.

Ribbons of Color Bracelet

Teacher Karyn Bovino will teach participants how to use three colors of Swarovski crystal beads to create an effect of ribbons woven together. Depending on the colors used this bracelet can be elegant and dressy or fun and casual.

Class Fee; $25.00 members, $35.00 non-members
Materials Fee: $35.00 with base metal clasp, extra for sterling sliver clasp.

Welcome to WABG

The Westchester Area Basketmakers Guild has been sharing the joy of weaving baskets together since 1986. WABG serves members mainly in Westchester and Putnam counties, as well as the greater NYC area.

Workshops are held several times a year in various locations, and many of our teachers are nationally and internationally known basketmakers. The classes we offer are geared toward beginning, experienced and advanced basketmakers. We also hold an annual "Make and Take" workshop in September to introduce new people to basketmaking.

Individual membership is $20 a calendar year, and entitles members to a discount in workshop fees, class registration priority, a quarterly newsletter, and email updates with information about upcoming workshops, guild news, basketry conventions, and more.

Ribbed Antler Basket

This workshop took place on September 26, 2009.

Weaver Karen Zane will teach participants how to make a small ribbed antler based. The frame will already have the God's Eye and the first set of ribs inserted, though these techniques will be demonstrated.

You may also pre-order a kit for a second random weave antler basket which will be demonstrated but not completed at the workshop.

Workshop fee: $45 members, $55 non-members

Additional fee for Random Weave kit: $25

Weaver Wendy Jensen will teach participants how to use lazy twill and three-rod wale to weave a short sided basket with a inner ledge to support a woven lid. The basket is finished with a Turks Head knot.

Join us for a fun day exploring the ancient craft of marbling. We'll start the morning with instruction o basic marbling techniques - preparing the size, surface and paints, preparing the paper and creating patterns for your paper. You will learning several marbling patterns - get gel, nonpareil, feather, chevron, French curl, stone and free draw. We will make samples of each on paper.

After lunch you can try your hand at marbling poplar strips for use in your basket, or marbling any other surface you'd like to try. Bring some possibilities with you if you wish - you must be able to wet the items.

The footstool is an Adirondack-style stool with twig legs that can be woven with either hickory bark or reed. Because of use of natural materials each finished footstool will be unique.

Photographer Ken Booth is coming to help us learn to take quality photos of our work. Ken was at the opening of our exhibit at Muscoot in August 2008 and took some awesome photos.

Mad Weave Tote Workshop

This workshop was held on January 24, 2009.

The decorative center of the “Mad Weave Tote” is woven in “tri-axial weave”, the same weave used for the traditional Shaker cheese basket. Judy uses brightly colored satin ribbon and a braid trim to make this snazzy tote bag stand out at the A&P! (Picture in the latest edition of the newsletter)

Students will weave the Mad Weave Star pattern on a board which will then be transferred onto a purchased tote bag. The star is woven with satin ribbon and has braid trim. Please bring sharp scissors for cutting ribbon. And don’t forget your lunch.

BIO: Judy Flanders moved to this country in 1973 and lived in White Plains for twenty-five years be-fore moving to Putnam County ten years ago,. She took her first basket making class in a private house doing just round reed, and made bases for the basket maker for a while. She subsequently signed up for a basket class with the White Plains Continuing Education department and after that was completely hooked. She started teaching basket making soon after that and has continued ever since teaching locally and at various locations around the country. She has been on the Board of WABG for many years and has served in various positions including twice as President.

Anyone with an interest in basketry may join. Annual dues are $20 for an individual and $25 for a family membership, and payable September 1 for the membership year through August 31.

Membership provides a subscription to the quarterly newsletter, a listing of all members, reduced workshop fees, priority workshop registration, and frequent email updates on classes, conventions, and local basketry information.

To join, print out and mail in the membership application that can be found below under "Attachments."

The guild newsletter is published quarterly (February, May, August, November) and mailed to each member. Basketry related articles, information and photos are welcome. Members may advertise their basketry services in each issue.

Current and future issues of the WABG newsletter in PDF format will be available upon request after members have received their copies in the mail. We are unable to post it here, as our maximum posting size is 500k, and the size of the PDF may vary from 750k to 2.5mb. Silk Fusion Basket Workshop

Tools needed: tape measure, scissors for cutting paper,

RadioShack micro clips (Judy will have some for sale).

This basket is being taught by Judy with Wendy Durfey's permission and help. Students will make a basket out of painted paper, initially molded over a styrofoam ball. After the basket is woven it will be covered with silk fiber which will them be varnished and dried to a hard finish. During the silk fusion process, feathers, metallic threads, etc., may be incorporated, so please bring anything you might like to use. The basket is approximately 4" in diameter and 4" high.
